Are there any guidelines for characteristics of the quorum drive, size, speed etc?

RSF-1 only requires a single small partition per zfs pool for heartbeating, 1Mb is more than sufficient (in fact it's generally configured to write to blocks 34, 36 and 38 only). There is also no speed requirement, 5400rpm drives are more than capable.

The next release of Nexenta (3.1) will drop the need for a dedicated heartbeat device and instead heartbeat through VDEV labels of devices in the pool.
